Project Overview
The pilot boat ‘Ruhuna 01’ was initially supplied by China Harbour Engineering Corporation (CHEC) to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). However, the vessel was found to have stability and operational deficiencies, preventing its acceptance by SLPA.
At the special request of CHEC, the required reactivation and modifications were assigned to Mermaid Solutions Pvt Ltd, who successfully addressed the technical shortcomings, ensuring the boat’s compliance with Lloyd’s Register classification.
Following successful completion, CHEC officially handed over the vessel to SLPA in 2016, and later, SLPA transferred the boat to Hambantota International Port Group, where it remains their only operational pilot vessel.
In 2024, Mermaid Solutions Pvt Ltd was again contracted to undertake comprehensive docking repairs to ensure the vessel’s continued reliability and compliance with class standards.
2016 Reactivation & Stability Modifications
• Naval architecture analysis & stability recalculations to address the vessel’s initial
instability issues.
• Ballast optimization & weight distribution adjustments to improve the center of gravity and ensure safe operational conditions.
• Reinforcement of hull structure to meet the required safety margins.
• Overhaul of propulsion system, including realignment of the shaft and tuning of the
propeller to optimize efficiency.
• Electrical system upgrades, ensuring compliance with class certification standards.
• Successful sea trials conducted under Lloyd’s Register supervision, leading to full
classification approval.
2024 Docking Repairs & Overhaul at Hambantota Port
• Hull Plate Renewal & Structural Reinforcement:
– Replacement of corroded and weakened sections of the underwater hull.
– Welding and reinforcement of key structural areas to maintain vessel integrity.
• Underwater Hull Cleaning & Painting:
– High-pressure water blasting and mechanical cleaning to remove marine growth.
– Application of anti-corrosive primer and high-performance antifouling paint to extend hull lifespan and improve hydrodynamics.
• Engine & Propulsion System Overhaul:
– Complete inspection and servicing of the main propulsion engines, including
turbocharger and cooling system maintenance.
– Alignment checks and tuning of the propeller and shaft system for optimal efficiency.
– Replacement of bearings and seals to eliminate leakage risks.
• Electrical & Navigation System Maintenance:
– Testing and calibration of electronic navigation equipment, including radar and GPS systems.
– Inspection and renewal of power distribution panels and wiring to maintain system reliability.
• Mechanical & Hydraulic System Servicing:
– Overhaul of steering system to ensure precision control.
– Servicing of hydraulic winches and deck machinery for seamless operation.
– Inspection and maintenance of fire suppression and bilge pumping systems to comply with safety regulations.
• Sea Trials & Final Certification:
– Conducted rigorous sea trials under operational loads to verify performance.
– Final class inspection by Lloyd’s Register, ensuring full compliance.
